Alhaji Dr. Asoma Banda   

ALHAJI (DR.) ASOMA ABU BANDA

A Ghanaian Entrepreneur born in June 21, 1933 at Kintampo but hails from Banda Ahenkro in the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana. Has founded several companies around the globe and serves on several other boards in Ghana and abroad. As a devout Muslim, commitment and support towards the socio-economic development of the country is his great concern and for that matter has receive several awards from governments and other organization.

Working Experience

· Founder and Chief Executive of Antrak Air, a hundred percent Ghanaian-owned airline company, and the first of its kind in the history of the aviation industry in Ghana and, first African to own ships.

· Founder and Chief Executive of Port Handling Company Limited

· Executive Chairman of Antrak Express Ltd. – local agent of United Parcel Service, an International Express giant dispatching courier mail internationally via its Worldwide Express delivery service and locally via its domestic service network

· Founding Member and Chairman of Cross Marine Services in Nigeria

· Founding Member of OTAL Holing Group – London.

· Established own Shipping Company in 1975 in Ghana and London, OT Africa Line, and the Antrak Group of Companies (London and Ghana) with over more than 146 branches opened in countries across the world, creating jobs for over 500,000 people globally

· Director in charge of Africa & Middle East – Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) of London.

· Worked with his father in the Road Transport Business which entitled traveling to Mopti to buy coffee and drive through down South on foot to Kumasi - a distance of about 1,500 miles. He would pitch a camp after every 12 miles to enable the cows to feed in order to deliver properly nourished, fat and presentable cow.

Commitment and supports

· Instrumental in making the Antrak Group of Companies (Ghana) to finance the reconstruction, refurbishment and maintenance of the maternity wing of the korle Bu Teaching Hospital in 1999 at a cost of nearly One Billion Cedis.

· As part of his contribution to the health delivery of his own people and the society at large, a brand new ambulance purchased and shipped from UK at the cost of 30,000 was donated to Kintampo District Hospital

· Built a Morgue at Kole Bu Teaching Hospital for the use of Muslims with brand new generator set at the cost of over 3,000 USD

· In collaboration with foreign partners, Ten Million US Dollars (70 Billion Cedis) was invested in the establishment of the Tema Container Termianl, resulting in the creation of about 100 jobs. In support for the maintenance of security, peace and tranquility in the country, he established Crime Prevention Foundation to help resource the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies.

· Constructed a Female Cell for the Nima Police Station estimated at 150,000,000.

· Constructed a Mosque at the Airport Residential Area, Accra at a total cost of over One Million US Dollars,

· Takes care of over 3,000 men & women annually.

Awards Received

· Conferment of Honorary Degree of Doctor of Entrepreneurship (Honoris Causa) by the University of Cape Coast.

· Second highest National Award of Companion of the Order of the Volta by

· President John Agyekum Kufour.

· Ghana’s Best Ever Transport and Logistics Personality of the Year by the

· Association of Chartered Institute of Transport and Logistics in 2006

· Kwame Nkrumah Leaders Award (2003) by All Africa Students Union in

recognition of your leadership qualities and support for the youth and students in Africa and the Diaspora.

· Awarded the title of Fellow of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi for acts of benevolence in 2002 during the University’s Special Golden Jubilee Congregation Award.

· Enterpreneur of the Decade (2001) by EMPRETEC Ghana Foundation

· Honoured for Lifetime achievement by the Ghana Shippers’ Council in recognition of your great strides in the maritime industry

· His Shipping Company won The Best Shipping Line Of The World Twice (1999/20000)

Other Information

Has two wives and eleven (11) children. He observes all the tenets of his religion to the latter. He pays his zakant without fail and travels to Mecca every year to spend the last 10 days of Ramadan in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.
